Hey so i’ve just started getting into alphas and still don’t really know how long my background string (i think that’s what it’s called but basically the string i knot onto) should be for my bracelets/keychains how much do you guys recommend?

I normally cut my base strings from around 20-22 inches. I leave about 6-7 inches at the top for the ties and then the bracelet ends up being about 5 inches or so. I've found that this length gives me enough room to hold my base strings when knotting, but doesn't leave too much scrap thread 🙂

Also a general rule can be the size of the wrist for the person you are making it for + a bit for braids on each side and I then add a few inches about 2. And if you want to do a wall hanging look for alphas you have already made measure the length and divide it through the number of rows. Make that for a few bracelets and look what your average row count is by cm/inch. Use that as a guide and add a bit for any endings you choose

Leave enough room for the start and end of your bracelet ties, then cut the length of how long you want your bracelet/pattern to be. because you don’t knot with the base strings, they shouldn’t get shorter. if you’re making keychains/shorter patterns, you can use less.

you’ll want to cut your base strings as long as you want the length of the combined bracelet and ties to be. mine are normally around 30 cm or a little less 🎠💌🎡🍓
