so i just made my first alpha and it turned out so weird. i thought i would use different colors of base strings so the first basestring was green, the second grey, then blue and so on, i thought it would help me get less confused but somehow when knotting my basestrings switched places oops, also you can see the basestrings at some points in the bracelet, are my knots not tight enough? help would be appriciated, thanks!PS. I know, it was my first alpha and I knew it wouldnt turn out perfect but i just wanna improve for my next alpha 🙂 |

Hi! I checked out that pattern number, and it seems like a real good pattern to try an alpha! The color of your base strings doesn’t matter at all, it doesn’t even have to match your pattern. I would suggest tying your knots a little tighter first. And second, if the base strings are showing through the pattern, after every row or two you can push the row of knots up with your fingers or your fingernails. That’s at least what I do. If your base strings are switching places, you most likely accidentally pulled a string out and tied a knot onto it without noticing. I’m bad at explaining things sometimes, but what I’m trying to say is you probably switched a base string’s place. Does that make any sense?

I had this problem too. Push the knots up, try to make your knots a bit looser and use leading strings that have a similar thickness. I hope this helps! 🙂

it doesn’t matter what color your base strings are because you shouldn’t be able to see them. i just recommend making tighter knots so there aren’t any spaces. you can do this by making the first half of your knot as tight as you want it, then the other part is just to secure the knot in place. hope this helps ✨📀💫

When I first made alphas I didn’t cut enough strings and it turned out super bumpy. I then went on YouTube and found Masha Knots. Her videos taught me everything I need to know about alphas. I definitely recommend her.

Hey! I have some questions on making alphas bc I've never made one before oof! So I want to surprise my brother with pattern #34337 as a key chain, bc he just got into that videogame it's from. However idk how to do it, but I'm watching Masha Knots' "How to Make Alphas" video currently! I also want to do a loop start then maybe a teardrop start but then how long would I have to cut the gray string? (Someone in the chat told me to cut the base strings 10 inches, is that right?) Srry I know it doesnt rlly make sense, but if u could answer, thats awesome! Thx 👍

@Auddawg88 Ten inches will almost definitely be enough for the base strings, just make sure to make the string you’re using for the loop longer. But I have two recommendations. First, I recommend that you watch Masha Knots’ newer alpha tutorial called “Flat alpha bracelets”, because it’s much, much better than her old one. And second, I recommend starting out with an alpha pattern that has only two colors before you make that keychain, because starting out with a pattern that has more than two colors can be pretty tough

@madeleine Yeah, I am going to other easier ones before I do this key chain, but I'm gonna do a teardrop loop so then it can be one. I am actually watching Masha Knots' tutorial on ho to make teardrop starts for an alpha, and I have watched her beginners guide and her other videos like this. I will definitely look into the video that you recommended though! I was also confused on how many base there was! I counted 25, is that right

@Auddawg88 Yes, that pattern has 25 base strings. You can also tell by either looking at the dimensions, or subtracting 1 from the number of strings given at the top of the pattern. To make an alpha loop for a pattern that has an odd number of base strings, you should make the loop with one extra base string (so 26 in this case) and then you can either add a column to one side of the pattern or you can use the extra base string as your first leading string

I usually pick the colour of the base string to be the colour I am never going to use in my alpha so they never switch places. Also Masha knots has a video for how to make an alpha for beginners that you could look to be sure where you went wrong! Hope this helps!
