I’m looking at some complex patterns of like words and faces and things and I noticed a sideways arrow. In every simple pattern I only see diagonal arrows...what knot do you use for the sideways arrows? Or just what do they indicate? Help!

Those patterns are called alpha patterns, and the ones with diagonal knots are called normal patterns. In normal patterns, you make knots with all of the strings. But in alpha patterns, you have base strings, which are that you don’t knot with. Instead, you knot onto them with your leading string, which is the string you make knots with. Technically, your leading string changes every time you do a color switch. In alphas, you switch colors by just tying a new color in, or dragging it across the back of the bracelet if it’s already been used. I know this is kind of a rough explanation, so I highly recommend watching Masha Knots’ YouTube video called “Flat alpha bracelets”
