@Elwen just make backward-forward knots on the left edge and forward-backward knots on the right. Be sure to make two knots on the same string. First bf/fb knot is to end one row and then you make another bf/fb knot on the same base string to start the next row. I think Masha knots has a great tutorial on youtube.
