@DragonPup3 this pattern has 12 base strings... the 13th is the lead knotting string (all patterns have the dimensions posted like that). Since you don't knot with base strings, they only need to be as long as your intended bracelet plus a length that's easy to work with.
Everyone's knots are different sizes depending on thread thickness and knot tension, so let's say if you normally knot 15 rows per inch, this pattern (76 rows) would be about 5 inches. I like to have ties on both ends that are about 6 inches each, and I like my bracelet at least 6 inches as well, so I would add a few blank rows to the pattern on each end to keep it centered.
Then add all those lengths plus a bit more just in case: 5 + 6 + 6 + 1 + xtra 2 inches = 20 inches total But if you make a loop or attach to a keychain, you don't need the extra length for the ties, just enough to work with. In that case, you need half as many base strings that are double-length and folded in half.
I normally use crochet thread for base strings which is pretty cheap, so I don't mind wasting a little 😊
But the threads for the actual pattern vary greatly. Most people don't cut the string, they just knot with the whole bundled skein. Or you could guess and cut a long length, add in more if necessary, or use the leftovers in a rag-rug later on. 😄
