Thank you @KniKnots it took a while to figure out and quite a bit of unpicking knots. It was like doing triangle ends within the pattern for 3 white knots, then a BF (or FB depending on the side) knot in colour and finally switching the direction of the 'triangle' end for another 3 whites. it's harder to explain than do...
