@abbiekumpf Every time you change colors, you will tie the new color onto the background string, just like you would with any of the the other knots. So for example in this pattern, the fourth row down and the seventh background string from the left, you will tie on green for the first time. When you do this, you will have a piece of that string hanging out on the backside of the pattern. I usually just leave these until I'm done with an alpha and then go back and weave/tie them into other cross strings to secure them before cutting them.
