It's so cute, I'll probably make one more this summer instead of a regular one. The first one was a gift for my friend and I feel like I need this keychain for myself, too.
@OOB this is an alpha pattern. It has 16 base strings which always remain vertical, never make knots with them- only ONTO them. Additional colors are added separately, making only forward knots straight across then backward knots straight across on the following row, according to how the pattern shows.
You can watch a video tutorial called How to Make Alphas located toward the top of the page between the pattern preview and the knot structure diagram. ( If you're on the BB app you can find a similar video on #19454 near the bottom of the page by @Racoon)
Hi! Can anybody share how does this weaving should be done? I can’t understand how to get white white thread in, what is the base, how black thread moves? I want to make a present but do not understand the mechanics with this picture (((( basic staff I can do
@maisignal instead of moving the leading strings around the base strings, you can also move the base strings around the leading strings. You then just need to pull the knot tight in the correct way.
You can also work with shorter pieces of leading strings and then just do a colour switch to the same colour once you run out.
@halokiwi thank you!! yes I wanted to make it for a keychain. I was wondering because my skeins are so big I thought it would be too difficult to pass them through the base, but thank you!
@maisignal since it is your very first alpha, you can't really know how long your base strings need to be, because that depends on the material you are using and how tight you are knotting. Once you knotted this alpha, you can use it to calculate how long the base strings for other alphas you are going to make, need to be. Base strings always need to be the length of the bracelet plus some extra for loops and ties etc. This pattern isn't very long (only 30) rows, so you don't really need to make your base strings super long, because the keychain won't be super long, if you are planning to make a keychain. If you want to make a bracelet, you need the base strings to be long enough to reach around your wrist and make loops and ties and you need to add some more rows to the pattern.
For the leading strings, I recommend to just keep them on the skeins because you can't really know how long those need to be 🙂
