For anyone interested, I am working on a version of this pattern with more sensible shaping. This one was my first time designing, and after having made it, I realize that the shaping element ended up real whack. There will still be weird color changes, and the "cut-out" effect won't be as pronounced, but it will be much more "maker-friendly".
I'd say the basket string comes in like in any regular alpha color switch -- only this time, you do take out some base strings to give the bracelet its shapes. Depending on which way the basket string comes in, you might have a tail on the end, so make sure you have some way to secure it so it's not hanging off the edge.
For ending off the basket, it was a little tricky. I really had to pull on the gray string (around row 98) to narrow back the shape of the bracelet. Even looking closely at it now, I think I could've done better or used a better technique.
Hopefully this is helpful. Let me know if you need to know anything else 😊
@cubepoetry@CraneWing did you do the part with the basket like a regular shaped alpha or did you do anything special since you needed to skip more than one knot?
