@TJS I know this is late, but for most patterns similar to this I tend to do two arms lengths--You could likely get away with less but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Adding string in can be really frustrating!
I was actually getting really bored with the patterns I learned to do until I found this site...this patterns hard at first but its actually pretty fun
